Stream: Bad Religion - "21st Century Digital Boy (Leg Lifters remix)"

Jul 05, 09

Consistently defining, trashing and redefining the happy go-between for rock music and endless creativity, Justin Pearson and Nathan Joyner (two-thirds of All Leather, not to mention countless others) are Leg Lifters, a project based on continuing that quest, but in the vein of remixing other songs rather than leafing through their own playbooks. The boys have just wrapped up a remix of Bad Religion's seminal "21st Century Digital Boy", turning the California straight-ahead aggro-punk godfathers' anthem into a full-on Locust affair, complete with digital hiccups, slayed vocals and terrifying production. Check out the tune on the boys' MySpace page.

Photos: Girls & Boys on July 3

Jul 05, 09

With two-hour sets from both Peter Hook (the bass player of both Joy Division and New Order) and Adam Freeland, this past week's Girls & Boys party at Webster Hall was really really a fun experience. Never mind the fact that a large portion of the crowd was basically bused in from the closed-for-a-few-nights Pacha--not really a long story there, but one we feel more comfortable not going on about, just listening to Peter Hook drop a New Order classic, "Bizarre Love Triangle", and then having that mix into the remix of Gorillaz's "Dare" was enough for us to be settled for the night. Not to mention the blistering club-ready set from Freeland, who just so happens to be that good of a DJ first, then a great musician second.

Download: La Roux - "In For The Kill (Techjio remix)"

Jul 05, 09

Just in time for the holiday weekend comes a rad remix from a Canadian of a track by the fire-hot Brits, La Roux. Sure, it doesn't entirely make sense, but whatever. It's cause for celebration America. Get with it. Techjio takes on "In For The Kill", off of Elly Jackson and Ben Langmaid's self-titled debut LP, and makes what we can only really describe as a thrilling mixture of late-90s drum 'n' bass and late-80s acid house (though interestingly sans the Roland bassline) with Elly's enthralling, squelched out vocals. Neither of these acts seem to be worried about hitting the mark on anything they do--and why should they?

Download: My Gold Mask - "Bitches (The Hood Internet remix)"

Jul 04, 09

(photo by Ryan Kirlin and Jack Armondo)

If you're like us, you love The Hood Internet's take on pretty much everything they've attempted to tackle. And, if you're like us even more, you've been itching for anything new you could put your mitts on from the dastardly duo of My Gold Mask. And so it's fitting that each of these windy city sets would somehow see fit to find each other for what turns out to be one of our favorite remixes/treatments/mash-ups. The Hood Internet take bits and pieces from Roxy Music's 1975 track "Love Is The Drug" to complement "Bitches", the hot-as-fuck original from Gretta and Jack aka My Gold Mask, meshing this swirling, dark, deviant, bouncy, "la la la"-filled, completely infatuating two-and-a-half minutes.

News: Neon Indian announce the release of Psychic Chasms

Jul 02, 09

Alan Palomo is putting the rest of us all to shame with his work ethic. We mean, first, dude makes one of the best EPs of the year thus far with his Texas-bred dreamwave act VEGA. Then he leaks bits and pieces of information over the past few months about a completely separate project under the moniker Neon Indian--with the help of a "visual artist" called Alicia Scardetta. And now he puts the cherry on top with the newsbreak of the debut full length from Neon Indian, the Lefse Records-released Psychic Chasms. One listen to the newest track to be leaked from the record, "Terminally Chill" ("Deadbeat Summer" saw its way to the blogosphere in April), will seep into your soul, oozing with effects and lazy, meandering, nice dream, tripped out high notes and bouncy lows.

Tracklist:

01 (AM)
02 Deadbeat Summer
03 Laughing Gas
04 Terminally Chill
05 (If I Knew, I'd Tell You)
06 6669 (I Don't Know If You Know)
07 Should Have Taken Acid With You
08 Mind, Drips
09 Psychic Chasms
10 Local Joke
11 Ephemeral Artery
12 7000 (reprise)

Toys: A-Trak and Dust La Rock present "Grateful Bear" for Kidrobot

Jul 02, 09

Yes, that's right. Boys and their toys, we suppose. Genius level/mad scientist Dust La Rock (whose ridiculously well-attended NYC show a few months back was just another sign) and one of the most well-known turntable jockeys there is, A-Trak, paired up with Kidrobot to produce an 8" toy collectible that comes complete with such wonderful trappings as a leather cuff, its own igloo, an "A" cap, gold chain. The list goes on. Retailing for $50, the toy is on sale now at Kidrobot storefronts. We're not going to lie, this thing is dope. Would really go well with our handful of dunnys we've acquired over the past few years.

Dust and A-Trak both were signing limited numbers of the bears at the NYC storefront yesterday and they had a sweaty rager of an afterparty at The Annex.

Getting Sassy with...Digitalism

Jul 02, 09

We here around THE CULTURE OF ME were once obsessed with all things relating to Sassy and Dirt magazines. And while those titles are long gone, the sentiment of how they covered the culture industries has indeed left its mark on writers and culture vultures everywhere. It is because of that influence that we are proud to present our features post, "Getting Sassy with...", wherein we bring you that much closer to your favorite bands by way of a simple Q&A session that's both painless and informative. Ha! Beat that, FOX News!

This time: Digitalism.

We're still waiting and waiting and waiting for a new LP to come around from the German dance punk duo Digitalism to follow the wildly successful Idealism that came out in 2007, and we know the boys are hard at work on this effort, so when we were given the option to interview them at all, even just for a minute, we jumped. Immediately. So, we didn't get a 100% commitment to respond to every single one of our questions that we usually throw at our favorite artists, but we did get asked to partake in this "bloggers ask" thing where a few of the Web sites that we actually read on the daily as well as us would submit three questions to the band and they'd answer them. We're still not totally happy with how much exposition the band gave to every question that wasn't ours, but it's still worth posting.

When I sing in the shower, it’s usually:
Basslines.

My favourite place to play on tour is:
On stage!

Press play on your iPod/media player and list the first three songs that come up:
Taxi Girl: “Mannequin”; Azzido Da Bass - “I Want U (Jence remix)”; a Digitalism unreleased song.

Submitted by THE CULTURE OF ME

After the jump, the rest of the "bloggers ask" questions.
