“You might not see things yet on the surface, but underground, it’s already on fire”
Y.B. Mangunwijaya
“Baby this town rips the bones from your back/It’s a death trap, it’s a suicide rap/We gotta get out while we’re young/cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run”
Bruce Springsteen, “Born to Run”
Turmoil. Violence. Destruction. At first glance, the Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible is absolutely everything you’d expect a thematic follow-up to a record like Funeral to be. But it's not Funeral. Seriously. Get used to critics and reviewers saying something along these lines in each of their critiques. This shouldn't be such a big surprise, however I'm sure most of the people who'll listen to it at first will be taken aback by how different AF has tried to go with their sound. Where Funeral was sprawling, Neon Bible is claustrophobic. Very claustrophobic. The intensity is still there, so worry not. Win, Regine and company have obviously been affected by the overwhelming response to Funeral in the ’04 (read: every piece of press shouting about "the biggest thing right now", etc.). You can tell that some of the new material is blaringly reactionary to that. And yet, this record will (I’m sure of this by the way) garner more divided praise and backlash than TV on the Radio or Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! combined. Just you wait.
If Funeral was a call-to-arms about loss, torment, redemption and lashing out to save what you treasure, Neon Bible is a message about taking stock. Seeing what’s really left and holding on to anything that’s still alive and dear. Funeral was dark in it’s context, not in it’s substance. Neon Bible is dark in both. “Ocean of Noise”, “The Well and the Lighthouse” and the title track are prime examples of the toll taken by the unknown nothingness that threatened in Funeral. What’s more is that the toll continues to rise throughout Neon Bible. And it’s not stopping. “Keep the Car Running” and “Intervention” are the most similar to the substance of Funeral, and the reprisal of “No Cars Go” is truly the final death knell. The bombs are dropping and there’s hardly anything to crawl under. By the time the listener reaches closer “My Body is a Cage”, what’s left is nearly nothing. In true-to-form Phantom of the Opera-style defeat and anguish, “My Body is a Cage” is the calling to remember the true meaning of hope. Is it worth it? How do you fight progression? Funeral brought your wish to return to simpler times to the forefront. But Neon Bible reminds us all of how being scared of something is the first step in conquering it.

Ever wonder what it must feel/look like when you've eaten too much near mid-day and have lost all motivation to do pretty much anything else at all with the rest of your day? Yeah? Me too.

Dear Friend,
Greetings!
Do accept my apologies if my mail does not meet your personal ethics, I want to introduce myself and this business opportunity to you. My name is Nana Owusu, a bank accountant.
I wish to know if we can work together. I would like you to stand as the next of kin to my deceased client who made some deposits to my bank. He died without any registered next of kin and as such the funds now have an open beneficiary mandate. Fortunately, both of you have the same last name so it will be very easy to make you become his official next of kin. The amount involved in this is sixteen million United States dollars.
If you are interested you do let me know so that I can give you comprehensive details on what we are to do. I urgently hope to get your response as soon as possible, please don't forget to get back to through this address [redacted].
Best regards,
Mr.Nana Owusu.
Let's hope I keep getting pieces of shit like this in my inbox for me to share with you all...wtf?!
Godspeed!

This is AIDS Wolf. They are naked in this picture. They also play music. Some say it fucking sucks. Others deify the beast as if it were the only way of life. Those who have seen them live or heard their music are sometimes drawn to rampaging, looting and painting their surroundings with the blood of their cousins and neighbors. Others are not. Which are you?
