Yeah, and fuck you very much too...

"The recording industry's trade group said Wednesday it will give hundreds of college students suspected of illegally sharing music online a chance to reach settlements before being sued for copyright infringement.

The move comes as the industry seeks to stamp out what it is says is rampant music piracy on campuses.

The Recording Industry Association of America said it was sending letters offering discounted settlements to 400 computer users at 13 universities.

The group intends to send hundreds of such pre-litigation letters to university computer users every month."

Emo's are deadly...

Remember my rant-filled article bitching about how Times writer Kelefa Sanneh summed up something it seems he knew nothing about?  No?  Okay then, read it again.  Not since the "grunge lexicon" hoax have I felt like generation gaps have been led astray simply for a laugh.  I like it most when the sheriff says that they wear hair over only one eye so they can "only see the world in half".  Ha!

OUT! at the Oscars

Feb 26, 07

Okay kids.  I'd like to get a little vote going.  I wasn't impressed at all by ANYONE at the Academy Awards last night (save for Mark Wahlberg's wife...the lovely girlfriend Karen had quite an eye-rolling at that).  So I was going to poll you guys about who looked best/worst, but instead I figured we should do something a little more interesting.  So, without much other ado, let's go for it!

Question:    Who looked GAYER last night??

A:   host Ellen Degeneres

B:    performer Melissa Etheridge

Go on and vote!!  Just leave a comment with your winner.  I know who mine is...

Sorry you guys can't view them anymore.  In the meantime, do you want to read my review again?  Of course you do.  Of course you do.

Arcade Fire from SNL

Feb 25, 07

The lovely girlfriend says that you should all stop listening to the Arcade Fire, because simply, they're HER BAND.  Yet another instance of that whole "knew them when they were still underground" thing.  Ha!  If I had a nickel...ah, fuck it.  I'm poor.

Oh, and by the way...acoustic guitar smash?!  Wow.  Totally unhinged Mr. Butler.  Pipe down.  You're Canadian.  You guys are great at harnessing the power of socialized medicine.  Not so much at this whole reckless abandon thing.  Go and hold try-outs for the next ex-cast member of STOMP! to end up as a "percussionist" for your next live outing.

Godspeed! and I hope this stays up for more than an hour.

The troubling differences similarities of bubblegum-punk-pop stars

Feb 24, 07

In the world of haters and such, nothing gets under our skin worse than seeing no-talent assclowns (and I'm just paraphasing here) getting millions for the same thing.  Beginning a career with nothing to show in originality other than gimmickry and whatnot is not only a cardinal sin, it's also see as treasonous to the entire craft of pop culture appearances.  It's an art form that many have seen bits of, but only a few have reaped everything from (see: McCartney, Paul; Pop, Iggy; Bowie, David; Simmons, Gene, et al.)  Which brings me to the disturbing observance that I stumbled upon this afternoon.

(video)    Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend, from the Best Damn Thing LP

(video)    Hillary Duff - So Yesterday, from the Metamorphosis LP

Okay.  Have you watched them yet?  I don't believe you.  Okay.  Good.  Now that you're with me on the level, let's discuss something rather scary.  I want you to close your eyes and think about the assault on your senses you just had to endure.  Don't harp on the crap lyrics and uninspired choreography (as if you can think of more than a handful of ACTUALLY INSPIRED choreography).  I want you to tell me, without looking again, which song is sung by which banshee.  Did you answer correctly?  Me neither!

Fact 1: Duff's song and video appeared in 2003, a year after Lavigne's breakthrough debut.  BUT....Fact 2: Avril's video appeared in 2007.  For real.  If you could make yourself a line chart to figure out the equation of how little punker Avril ended up being more pop than Duff in 4 short years, you've got a leg up on that dude jeff.  I just do not know.  Can't explain.  What has the pop world come to when a "punk" girl from Canada sounds more hookerish than the Pussycat Dolls (not by much, mind you) and Duff somehow figures to be the one deemed with talent.  I mean, it's not like either of them really have anything to show for the millions of records and public dollars they've acquired.  Think about that for a little while and try not to gag on a little vomit.

Capital eeeewwwwww!

From the New York Times (go figure):

"Now the pole — think ballet barre turned vertical — is the new star at racier versions of Tupperware parties in well-heeled (if high-heeled) areas like this one in the northwest hills of Morris County, about 33 miles from Manhattan. Billed as “femme empowerment,” such at-home pole dancing lessons are taking place in the realm of book clubs, with mothers — and grandmothers — learning slinky moves for girls’ nights in, bachelorette send-offs, even the occasional 60th birthday celebration."

Um.  More?
