Listen to this shit. It is the definition of inexcusable. I mean, when Amy Winehouse was lushed out and decided to break out the "Beat It" cover, the outcry was hilarious. I can't wait to see how this whole fucking shenanigan makes its way out of our collective conscience. I hope. For our sake.
Seattle lable Sub Pop has recently decided to push the newest record from Jimmy Tamborello (aka Figurine aka DNTEL aka that guy who made all of the beats for the Postal Service) by issuing an amazing opportunity for would-be Timbaland's or Neptunes or Y.A.C.H.T.s, etc. Here's the low-down:
Starting right now, and running until May 29th, 2007, we are having a Dntel remix contest. The idea here is pretty simple and goes something like this:
You download the vocal track for the song Dumb Luck from Dntel’s forthcoming, really-pretty-terrific -if-we-do-say-so-ourselves album Dumb Luck right here
You remix it.
You send it to us. To do so, you can email an MP3 or AAC to webmaster@subpop.com, so long as the attached file is 8Mb or less and you write “Dntel Remix Contest!” in the subject line. Or, you can mail your remix to us on a cd-r at this address: Sub Pop Records Dntel Remix Contest! 2013 4th Ave., 3rd Floor Seattle, WA 98121
We pick which one we like the best.
We’ll
give the winner not only the not-insignificant-though
-not-necessarily-life-changing-we’ll-grant-you sum of $500 but also
include the track on an upcoming Dntel remix release! Minor fame and
even more minor fortune await.
Keep it locked here at the culture of me as the tracks roll in. This should be pretty awesome x 3. Can anyone get me Sanjaya for laying down a new vocal track? Hook a brother up.

A·poc·ry·pha (ə-pŏk'rə-fə) n. writings or statements of questionable authorship or authenticity.
About two years ago, I remember the lovely girlfriend and I sat down in my first apartment, way the fuck down south in Brooklyn, close enough to Coney Island that it seemed almost atypical NOT to smell hot dogs all day long, and watched the HBO mini-series "Empire Falls", based on Pulitzer winner Richard Russo's sprawling novel, obvs. of the same name. Set in the middle of a small mill town in Maine, the story is trademark Russo. Quirks, comedy, idiosyncracies. Drama drama drama. The major mood throughout the novel is that of frustration.
I bring all of this up because it coincides with both another memory and the new LP from Andrew Bird, Armchair Apocrypha. The other memory is that of my own trip to Maine a little over a year ago, when I had taken a weekend trip to Bangor to shoot rockabilly legend Wanda Jackson for this film I'm still to this day working on. In one conversations I had with a local man, I was told about the island of Grand Manan, New Brunswick. I was told that it was just one of dozens of islands between Maine, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia that you can only access it via ferries or planes (though more often than not, it's ferry).
I imagine that these ferries would be soundtracked with Armchair Apocrypha. Hours spent looking out on ocean waters with the sort of imagery that Andrew Bird creates without the aid of a constructed melody or pattern.
To be honest, I am not a fan of Andrew Bird's. I know this, because until I received Armchair Apocrypha, I don't actually remember listening to anything he's put out for more than 10 or 15 minutes. But as I listened to the new LP, I realized that he's quite an eclectic human being, even by musician standards. Armchair mixes pretty much every genre possible (rattle them off if you need to, but you should get the point) and spins and weaves it all together as best as he sees fit. He overdubs and overdubs and overdubs, almost to the point of nausea. Sure, it's a great pop record, but it's so hodge-podgey at times, you get frustrated. And I could certainly have used about 33% less whistle samples. But tracks like "Darkmatter", "Plasticities" and "Spare-Ohs" are stand-outs for sure. And I'm sure that this will end up on many an end-of-the-year list (mine by honorable mention, maybe), simply because of the melting pot infused throughout. In a time when bands and artists are getting notice for including rare instruments (glockenspiel, viola, kazoos, whatever), Bird is no different.
Bird is a meticulous creature and it seems throughout much of the record that he spent countless hours tweaking, picking and correcting bits and pieces of his compositions. And because of this, there aren't many standout moments, or for that matter, many peaks or valleys. The landscape he creates is a beautifully textured one, but one that is sometimes too perfect. There is such a thing as too much polish, and Bird draws closer and closer to that line.
TV On The Radio's David Sitek has been named as the producer of the new Massive Attack album.
The album will be the band's first new material since 2003's '100th Window'.
Sitek said he was intimidated when he first met the band.
"When we found out we were playing with them, I was like, 'How the fuck am I...'cause it's obvious that I steal shit. I thought he was going to take my lunch money or something," he said. "Then to be asked to work on it was like 'Holy fuck'. It's one of those things I don't even question."
I wonder if he'll get anyone from his rolodex to guest?? You know, like Tunde or Kyp, Katrina from Celebration, um, Karen O (minus the leaking of demos, obvs.), Dragons of Zynth, Bowie, etc. Guess we'll have to see and hope for a laundry list to leak soon.

PREPARE FOR A 'COLD SUMMER': YOUNG JEEZY & USDA SET MAY 22 RELEASE DATE FOR DEBUT ALBUM;
LEAD SINGLE, "WHITE GIRL," SET TO HIT AIRWAVES AS NATIONAL "STREET DREAM" TOUR ROLLS ON"GO GETTA," SMASH SINGLE FROM THE INSPIRATION, BREAKS TOP 5 AS JEEZY PREPARES "DREAMIN'" FEAT. KEYSHIA COLE
The forecast for the summer just got a whole lot chillier, as the Snowman has just announced a May 22nd release date for the first release from his Corporate Thugz Entertainment (CTE) label, Young Jeezy Presents USDA: Cold Summer."It's crazy," Jeezy recently told MTV News. "I wanted to do it mixtape-style 'cause I wanted it to be something for the streets. It's like Trap or Die on steroids. I love that. It's a street album, just raw."Young Jeezy Presents USDA: Cold Summer is a certified street banger from top to bottom, featuring production work from CTE's stable of up-and-coming producers like Arnaz "The Nazty One" Smith, T.A., Tony Rey and Speedy. The album also features production from Sanchez, Midnight Black and Drumma Boy, who produced the group's first 808-heavy single "White Girl."
Jeezy is currently out on the road headlining the national "Street Dream" tour and has brought the members of USDA - ATL spitter Slick Pulla and Panama City's Blood Raw - with him. Built into Jeezy's set is a segment highlighting USDA, including "White Girl," which is already starting to buzz in the south. And starting today, fans will be able to check out exclusive footage of the group on the road on USDA TV, a YouTube channel set up by CTE: www.youtube.com/usdatv
In the video it says this:
"SEND YOUR PICTURE, AGE AND CONTACT INFORMATION TO WHITEGIRL@CORPORATETHUGZENT.COM FOR YOU CHANCE TO BE A PART OF HIP HOP HISTORY."
I don't really even know what to say to this, other than, if I could get away with coming up with a street team search made entirely of white girls pushing my rap record, I wouldn't need to say anything. I'm sure anyone with even the remotest of feminist-leanings will be having a fucking field day with this. As for me, I'm calling Kathleen Hanna.
We all get them. The MySpace "friend" requests that are never preceded
by anything. No hello's. No nothing. Just simple requests from
bands/musicians that somehow want another digit added to their Tila
Tequila-obsessed egos. Here's a part of the culture of me where I
give you a first impression of the potential "friend", so you don't
have to bother.
Perpetrator: Verse
What his bio says: In the "band members" section, our friend Verse lists "me.....my thoughts...and my microphone"
What that dude jeff says: Okay. So douche's MySpace page has so much "pimping" and "hot layouts shit" that the standalone music player doesn't work. Um. News flash. If you're an unsigned rapper trying to break in to the bizness by posting your raps on the MySpace, just make sure people can hear them. Um. Oh. And look at dude's pics! Wtf?! Hit the culture of me back when you've got ready-to-listen-to tracks. Until then, DENY!!!
I'm totally in the boonies of Radio City Music Hall for the Arcade Fire show, but at least the culture of me wasn't shut out in a virtual waiting room like the show pictured above. Who else is with me in the "gonna-bring-my-super-zoom"??
so ive probably talked enough now about how much i hate
