Review: Frog Eyes
Tears of the Valedictorian

May 14, 07

I don't get it.  Usually, those 4 words completely mar a review.  When a listener is confused or upset by something they are hearing, the modus operandi is obvious: turn it off.  But with the new LP by Canadian freaks Frog Eyes, entitled Tears of the Valedictorian, if you get upset, confused or bored, try to push through it.  It's the nooks and crannies of this record that really set it apart from your usual verse-chorus-etc. run of the mill independent music circa the '07.  Understated brilliance will be found at every corner.

I can't follow the lyrics or truly understand the "meaning", but it challenged me.  And that's what good music is all about.  It is supposed to make you think hard about what it is that you like about it.  And, what you don't.

If you're looking for a musical and dramatic interpretation of a digital-age vision quest, Frog Eyes will show you the way.
