Matador Records's final signing of 2006, the awesome Times New Viking, are playing a free in-store show tonight in BillyBurg at Academy Records. They're ripping it up in support of their first LP for the label, Rip It Off, coming at stores January 22. The Columbus, OH trio already have a few other full lengths under their belts (Dig Yourself and ...present the Paisley Reich). So, you know. This could totally be a huge show with tons of TNV's material.

Oh to be young and beard-y. That's right, kids, Band of Horses, our dear friend Sarah's favorite (we guess at this point really) band of the moment, have licensed the use of their track "The Funeral", from last year's excellent LP, Everything All the Time, for use in this advertisement for the 2008 Ford Edge. So, enjoy it, we guess. And because we're almost positive that everyone and their mother already has downloaded that track, here's one from Everything that we actually think is better.

Spank Rock is the greatest thing to happen in hip hop in the last few years. Combining the grit of the Compton scene, the bounce of Baltimore and the lust for girls like the dirty south scene, this Philly crew put the "ass" back in "verbal assassins". They didn't win any awards at this year's Woodie Awards (ugh, even typing that sucks), but they owned like mad at performing. We know we're totally late on this one, but fuck it. It's a banger all around.

On November 14, Britney Spears confided to her friends in e-mails that she was four weeks pregnant — and that she was sure the father was J.R. Rotem, a music producer she's been seeing on and off since she separated from ex-husband Kevin Federline in 2006. When asked about the pregnancy, J.R. confirmed exclusively to In Touch that Britney is carrying his child. "It's true," he says. Chris Garneau looks an awful lot like Sufjan Stevens. And, not unlike every indie kid's favorite elder STATESmen (get it?), Mr. Garneau also comes from the school of harmonies, pop, intellect and grace. And, again not unlike Sufjan, the guy's totally been under our radar (admittedly) for quite some time.
The Brooklyn-by-way-of-Boston native (yet again making us feel terrible for not taking notice) released an epically wonderful record called Music for Tourists a while back. The album is equal parts beautiful arrangements and soul-crushing, near Rufus Wainwright-level melancholia. It's an easy comparison to make, since Garneau is gay and plays the piano, so that might be a bit too much pigeonholing for one person to handle, but we think it just fits. You know?
With all of that behind us now, we just wanted to tell you that Chris Garneau's newest EP, C-Sides, was just released yesterday. So, basically, we're saying you should go and find it at your earliest convenience (which, by our clock, is right now).
