Emerging: Matinee Club
Dec 17, 07

One of the most prevalent examples of the impending dominance the Interweb has had on the musical tastes of the kids who troll around on the ol' www is that the electronic music genre (and by that we know it's a loaded genre name that could be applied to almost anything out these days) is that all these terribly unknown bands are having such a wide array of new fans every single day. With the advent of things like MySpace and YouTube, dozens of new acts are beating down the doors of fans' hearts each and every time these kids log on.
And we at the culture of me are no different. Believe. We don't always have the kinds of access to new acts that we wish we did have (seriously guys, send us some fucking promos or something), so we take to the web. And when we find the gems, we present them to you. So, here's another. Matinee Club, a trio from the UK who were born about a year ago under the moniker The Modern, caused quite a stir back then in the UK when there was a cock-up over the charts on the rampant downloading of some of their music by fans. But that's all in the past, so Matinee Club are moving on. The music is totally not future-oriented, sounding most times like Madonna singing back-up on early Human League records or even a female-fronted Soft Cell. Frontwoman Emma Cooke brings the heat (both in lyrical content and in physique...just take a look) while boys Nathan Cooper and Chi Tudor-Hart hit the keys. Dig on their sound if you have a penchant for a less-aggro Faint or a Berlin cover band. PLUS, their video for "Discotheque Francais" is so "Moulin Rouge"-meets-James-Bond it's unbelievable.
