While you may be thinking that we're referring to the actor who's been reported dead almost as many times as he's been reported as alive, well, we're not. Instead, we're talking about a group of kids from LA who weren't even born yet when the real Vigoda was first reported as maybe being deceased. Also, just as a sidenote, the real Abe Vigoda was in "North", so, clearly, he must have been dead at that point.
Born out of the same downtown Los Angeles scene as groups like Mika Miko and No Age (all of whom have shared the stage at LA venue The Smell at one point or another), these four kids have created all sorts of noise over the last year or so around their fair city and, hopefully soon, everywhere else. This is due, in large part, to what No Age guitarist Randy Randall has said about their sound: "The term tropical
punk means [the songs] sound a bit like a cross between Captain Beefheart and Crass. They
are fast and feature Caribbean melodies; they write beautiful
catchy island dance songs. We love them."
And while we may not care too much for the invention of this new genre (and for God's sakes it's probably because we can no longer stand the redefining of genres that goes on every day), we can agree with Randall's love. Able to mix no wave with conga beats, Abe Vigoda are going to be huge. If you like anything having to do with music that bomps, thrashes and blares, all the while staying beautifully catchy, this is the prescription for you.
