Video: J.T. Woodruff (Hawthorne Heights) says goodbye to Casey Calvert

Dec 31, 07

In what could be the best send-off we at the culture of me could have imagined for a fallen band member, J.T. Woodruff from Hawthorne Heights penned a new song for Casey Calvert, the band's guitar player who suddenly passed away a short while ago from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.  This was just the end of really troubling year for the band, including various law suits with their former label, Victory, as well as their management company.  Here's to hoping that the band bounce back in a really big way in the '08.

Emerging: Abe Vigoda

Dec 31, 07

While you may be thinking that we're referring to the actor who's been reported dead almost as many times as he's been reported as alive, well, we're not.  Instead, we're talking about a group of kids from LA who weren't even born yet when the real Vigoda was first reported as maybe being deceased.  Also, just as a sidenote, the real Abe Vigoda was in "North", so, clearly, he must have been dead at that point.

Born out of the same downtown Los Angeles scene as groups like Mika Miko and No Age (all of whom have shared the stage at LA venue The Smell at one point or another), these four kids have created all sorts of noise over the last year or so around their fair city and, hopefully soon, everywhere else.  This is due, in large part, to what No Age guitarist Randy Randall has said about their sound: "The term tropical punk means [the songs] sound a bit like a cross between Captain Beefheart and Crass.  They are fast and feature Caribbean melodies; they write beautiful catchy island dance songs. We love them."

And while we may not care too much for the invention of this new genre (and for God's sakes it's probably because we can no longer stand the redefining of genres that goes on every day), we can agree with Randall's love.  Able to mix no wave with conga beats, Abe Vigoda are going to be huge.  If you like anything having to do with music that bomps, thrashes and blares, all the while staying beautifully catchy, this is the prescription for you.

Photos: A house party in Bushwick turns out to be massive

Dec 30, 07

So it was supposed to just be a house party in Bushwick thrown by a collective of kids who lived all together in this 3-story house.  Instead, the shit turns out to be huuuuuuuuuge by all accounts because of some douches putting it all over the place on the internet.  So, yeah.  Intense?  Sure.  Fun?  No fucking doubt.

Another wonderous night out with Mr. Photog.  It doesn't get much better than a few parties, some kids in underwear, a couple in facepaint (awesome), and everyone dancing.  Dig on The American Apparel party last night at Hugs.

Video: Common - "I Used To Love H.E.R."

Dec 28, 07

Common makes a loving video about the past 30 years of hip hop, albeit with some minor (seriously, they're just minor) pokes at the frailty of gangsta rap and the lifestyle choices of a lot of hip hop's forebearers from that era.  A lot of folks have been calling Common soft for the shit he does, but we have to give it him.  His flow is flawless and the beats are ridiculously catchy.

It's not nearly as populist as, say, Kanye or whatever, but the mass appeal of Common (cf. Gap, Lincoln commercials?) is undoubtedly both his calling-card and his undoing.

Emerging: Seabear

Dec 27, 07

Maybe one of the best things we've heard about Iceland is this band.  Originally just one dude, the band has ballooned up to seven members over a short span of time (though don't worry, they've promised not to expand any farther) while not really affecting the sound too much.  If you closed your eyes and imagined the perfect walk on an autumn day, it'd be soundtracked by Seabear.

Mixing the easy-going rhythms of sweet indie pop from the Norse with the sort-of-morose temperament of the newest clan of hyper-literature indie kids making music in America (ahem, Shins and Decemberists), Seabear instantly grab the listener.  You'll never want for more from these guys, we can promise you all that.  Oh yeah, and they just about do the best cover of "Teenage Kicks" we've ever fucking heard.

R.I.P.: Benazir Bhutto

Dec 27, 07

We don't really know how to cover these kinds of things (without getting snarky), but we'll just say that this is shocking.  Even though she was once in favor of the Taliban as an equalizing agent for Pakistan, recently she had taken an exceedingly anti-Taliban viewpoint, which we applaud.  The first woman to ever be elected to lead a Muslim state is now dead and well, we'll let The New York Times do the rest:

The Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated near the capital, Islamabad, on Thursday. Witnesses said Ms. Bhutto, who was appearing at a political campaign rally, was fired upon at close range by a gunman, and then struck by shrapnel from a blast that the government said was caused by a suicide bomber.

Ms. Bhutto, who had twice been the country’s prime minister and was a leading contender to be the next prime minister after elections set for Jan. 8, was declared dead by doctors at a hospital in Rawalpindi at 6:16 p.m. local time. At least a dozen more people were killed in the attack, and some reports said there were at least 20 dead. Hours later, her body was carried out of the hospital in a pale yellow casket, held high by hundreds of her followers clad in black.

The exact circumstances surrounding the assassination were still unclear. Senior officials in Ms. Bhutto’s party said she was leaving after addressing the rally and stood up in her car, putting her head through a window in the roof to wave at the crowd when she was hit in the head by a sniper in a nearby building. Witnesses said that they heard two or three shots in total, and that the car moved on for another 50 yards before a suicide attacker blew himself up.
