mp-FREE: Pants Yell! make us glassy-eyed with tracks from Allison Statton
Dec 06, 07

Indie pop is a much maligned genre, what with the alleged denotation for sissy boys and unattractively smart girls, cat obsessions, button presses and cardigan sweaters. But fuck that. That's all hearsay and bullshit.
We at the culture of me can sometimes be found having a crisis of music preference, at times trying to figure out if we want to be math rocky or maybe old school hip hop-ish and at other times straight up alternative. But most times, mind you, we find ourselves digging into the crate of our iPod for some good old fashion Sarah records acts, maybe something from Rough Trade in the early 80s, et al.
Boston-area indie pop group Pants Yell! just released a masterpiece of a record called Allison Statton (which, if you're counting, is an allusion to the lead singer of Young Marble Giants). It's really and unabashedly so good with intent and so unbelievably twee and gentle, it's disarming. We posted a track by them some time ago in talking about this year's New England Pop! Fest and if that's any indication, you should already be downloading these songs. For fans of Orange Juice, Josef K, Belle & Sebastian or even New York City's own The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. You won't be misled by us here at the culture of me. Ever.
