Video: Coconut Records - "Minding My Own Business"

Mar 31, 08

Coconut Records aka Jason Schwartzman has a new video uploaded on the YouTube.  Jason has his brother Robert (aka that dude from Rooney) sit in front of the webcam and sing along.  Pretty tame, but if you think about it, some of the most popular videos ever put up on the Internet were comprised of one or two dudes singing along to pop songs.  A tried and true formula.

News: Paddy Casey is MTV's artist of the week

Mar 31, 08

The plaintive Irish singer-songwriter's second studio album, Living, was certified 11-times platinum in Ireland, and confirmed as the highest selling Irish album of the year. His third studio album, Addicted to Company (Part One), is slated for release in the U.S. on April 1, 2008.  The whole album is full of anthem-worthy songs and you should check in on Casey whenever you can.

Photos: Tiswas with The Filthy Youth

Mar 30, 08

The guy in the picture above is called Ed Westwick.  You may know him as the character Chuck Bass from this little show on the CW, "Gossip Girl".  He is also the lead singer and songwriter for the London, UK-based band The Filthy Youth (yes, he's British, get over it already).  The band is really really actually pretty good.  Like, not a vanity project kind of good.

We had the pleasure of booking and promoting the band's first ever United States show at Tiswas, the weekly party at The Annex here in New York City.  We took a few pics, but we swear, if you just Google the band and March 29, you'll probably find better ones.  We were too busy on the balcony trying to figure out who the real people who we put on the guest list were.  Oh yeah, and celebrating our efforts in making the showcase come off so well and sold out and packed to the gills.  And celebrities?  Some showed, some didn't.  Etc.

Stream: new Couples tracks from The Long Blondes

Mar 30, 08

The fact that a band like The Long Blondes continue to write charming, catchy, near-riot-inducing infectious pop songs should serve as fair warning that their new record, Couples, out April 8, could potentially be a shoo-in on dozens of Top 10 lists come the end of the year (including ours, maybe).

And while the three tracks we've heard from the new record seem to be making a slight departure from the Someone To Drive You Home aural compositions, that doesn't mean the tracks aren't really really good.  See for yourself by listening to "Round The Hairpin", "I Liked The Boys" and "Clever By Half" on The Long Blondes' MySpace page.

Video: Phosphorescent - "A Picture Of Our Torn Up Praise"

Mar 30, 08

Lilting and morose, the new video for Matthew Houck's Pride track "A Picture Of Our Torn Up Praise" is full of wintry landscapes in rural Iowa, a cast of 20 individuals aged 5 to 65 years old, a horse named Elaborate Affair and the work of a champion local taxidermist, all perfectly matching the song's original tone.  The Brooklyn native plays a solo show at Bowery Ballroom April 7.

Live: Dagger God = Goes Cube? Playing tonight at Magnetic Field's 2nd-to-last show ever?

Mar 29, 08

In a ridiculously cryptic MySpace bulletin, the dudes from Brooklyn's hardest, core-iest(?), most intense band pretty much ever, Goes Cube, have led all of us to believe that maybe this band called Dagger God is better than they appear.  From the post:

Tonight (Saturday) is Magnetic Field's second to last night. DAGGER GOD is playing along with the Brought Low.

We think it's really awesome that there's a band called DAGGER GOD.
We have a record called Beckon the Dagger God.
We will be at Magnetic Field tonight.
It is my (David) birthday officially at midnight.

DAGGER GOD. What an amazing band name. And, really, they are an amazing band. I hear they number their songs.

DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!

Weird.  They played last night at Union Pool in Greenpoint, so we're going to go ahead and declare that the trio will be appearing tonight at Magnetic Field (on stage dudes, on stage) under the Dagger God moniker.  Right?

Video: Justice - "Phantom Pt. II" (unofficial...we think)

Mar 29, 08

Independent artists usually make videos that are either too bizarre or too focused on identification of the artists.  In the case of French DJs-are-rock-stars Justice, the video for "Phantom Pt. II" (which may or may not be officially sanctioned as the YouTube site makes note) is both.  It's borderline annoyingly bizarre and so identifiably something the boys would do.  Coming from the same guys who "performed" on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" as a five-piece band of pop music icons instead of just as themselves, someone should have seen this coming.
