Photos: Hush at Arlo & Esme

May 31, 08

Dudes, Arlo & Esme on E. 1st St. is fucking gargantuan.  Cavernous, dark, really good sound.  It's totally eye-opening when you find a new spot that's as cool as a basement and comfortable as a cafe.  It's like walking into the downstairs at Lit, without that urine smell.

Thanks to Jake Destruction for the invite.  We'll be working together more often, as he's offered us the residency for the other party he throws, One Night Stand, 1st and 3rd Saturdays at Arrow Bar.

Video: MGMT - "Electric Feel"

May 30, 08

MGMT's things to do today:

1.   Ride motorcycle into the sky, thereby bringing down the moon
2.  "Dance" in a forest (seriously, those guys cannot dance)
3.  Have an orgy
4.  Hang out with animated animals who, subsequently, can play drums
5.  Wear sleeveless anything

mp-FREE: Mr Gaspar is a DJ from LA

May 30, 08

And much like that other LA-based disc jockey we've been raving about recently, he's really really really really good.  The remixes and beats from Mr Gaspar are hilariously smooth and polished, mixing the electro basics of someone who can't stop listening to 604 and the blips, beeps and bangs (and we mean bangs) of any old hip kid who listens to too much Ed Banger shit.  Keep a lookout for this guy as we're sure he'll be on the radars of every other blogger who likes high tops and bangers.  Also, if you don't think the "Lovefool" remix is hot shit on a stick, um, go fuck yourself.

What's going to happen when you mix in some of the finest arbiters of experimental post-rock with one of the most predominant figures in psychedelia?  Well, we'll just have to wait and see, yes?  Yes.  Roky Erickson (best known by most as the howler from The 13th Floor Elevators) will be guesting on the final track off the Batcat EP, set to drop in September.

Tracklist:

01 Batcat
02 Stupid Prick Gets Chased By The Police And Loses His Slut Girlfriend

mp-FREE: more new tracks from Streetlab

May 29, 08

One of our most favorite of remix acts, NYC's Streetlab, hit us up today with two new tracks they've just cut together and seriously, we can't say much about them.  Just listen, enjoy, download, and, well, dance.  These guys cut bangers all the time.  We can't wait to hear what else they're going to send us in the coming months.

mp-FREE: The Sugar Oaks' "No One Can Love You Like Me"

May 28, 08

Hooray!  It's like Rilo Kiley, except without all of the Under The Blacklight backlash drama.  Country-tinged and full of the kind of slowgoing, pensive tone you'd expect from the close-to-folk band known as The Sugar Oaks, "No One Can Love You Like Me" really hits you once the singing stops.  All that's left is sparse instrumentation and sunny, AM radio vibes.  If you've heard of the band before, the only shock that will come to you in listening is the absence of Soraya Zaumeyer, who left the group earlier this year, which paves the way for the Florida band to become a full-on guyfest, all the while keeping level with their wispy, beautiful songwriting.

Emerging: Rose Kemp

May 28, 08

Imagine Marnie Stern being influenced by The Doors instead of that scene in "Crossroads" and you have something along the lines of a good description for Rose Kemp.  Also, minus the screaming over distortion and put in some nearly-operatic, marginally banshee-esque, all-too-theatrical singing and shredding.  Ann and Nancy Wilson would be terribly proud to know they've birthed this kind of tripped out femme fatale from Bristol, UK.  You would be proud to listen.

Video: Excepter - "Any and Every"

May 28, 08

Enjoy the most groovalicious yet still convincingly scary and voodoo-like video for the NYC group's latest Debt Dept. track.  Try and deny your love for dub-infused delerium, we dare you.
