Amy Winehouse covers ska hits for EP

Jul 11, 08

She may be bat-shit crazy, an addict and sort of half-retarded on stage, but little miss Winehouse sure can make things sound amazing once she starts singing.  Least, that's what we've been able to gather while listening to this 7-inch only EP that girl just released called, of course, The Ska EP.  Complete with covers of "Monkey Man", "Cupid" (already posted here a while back) and "You're Wondering Now", the disc is at its best in evidence of "Hey, Little Rich Girl",  which (in its original 1980 incarnation by The Specials) spun a tortured story of a never-happy well-to-do teenage runaway whose life takes on a darker turn.  But here, in the reverie that is Amy Winehouse's life story, the track is mostly an almost shocking soon-to-be (maybe) self-fulfilling prophecy.  The song's been out for a while now, but somehow, in the context of this record, it almost makes more sense.
