Emerging: Hellsongs

Sep 02, 08

There's something shocking that happens when you take metal songs (those beacons of darkness and despair, call-to-arms for war and battle, diatribes on strife and anger) and show them what it feels like to go low-tempo.  They get even creepier.  This is totally, 100% no-lie apparent in Hellsongs, a Scandinavian crew of covers-seekers whose Songs In The Key Of 666 is so good, it's scary (sorry!).  Vocalist Harriet Ohlsson, guitarist Kalle Karlsson and Johan Bringhed on keyboards lose all of the distortion (save for the bit in your hearts) without losing even a drop of the feeling.  Like an 18" Stonehenge, Hellsongs create cutesy little suites that are instantly hum-along-able, not to mention totally lovable.  And what's more?  It's not kitschy.  Not one bit.  Sure, it doesn't exactly warrant repeated listens too much, but then again, who cares?  Get a copy of Songs In The Key of 666 now.
