mp-FREE: The Young Punx - "Mars Sounds Better With Me"

Sep 30, 08

Take one part Stardust's "Music Sounds Better", originally produced by Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk, and a punch of Fake Blood's almost instantly-classic "Mars", combine the two with the mortal and pestle known as The Young Punx (remember them guys?) and what you get is a bona fide mash-up hit.  There's all sorts of cuts and cues in the track that are excellent "ah ha!" moments and we couldn't be happier to be the ones to premiere this track.  From our lips to your hearts, this track is manic, maniacal, and so good it's going to stick in your stomach like chewing gum.  Watermelon-flavored.

Video: Rye Rye's homemade "Hardcore Girls" video + new remix

Sep 30, 08

The Count (aka Herve) and Sinden's last B-more infused banger, "Beeper", was so good it made us gasp every time we heard it.  Same goes for 17-year-old upstart (and recent M.I.A tourmate) Rye Rye's "Shake It To The Ground".  So why not put these three together and find out what kind of ill product comes out?  Well, the three found out what that "what" is in "Hardcore Girls", a slamming, no ceiling-ed hammer of a track that's just as good as you'd expect.  Rye Rye, darling that she is, even went ahead and made a homemade video for the song.  Hell, we've even got a new remix of "Hardcore Girls", done by some French dude you may be familiar with.  He goes by Don Rimini.

Photos: Last Hurrah for I Can Haz Party

Sep 30, 08

One of the best indoor/outdoor party jam scenes this summer has been the series of bangers known as "I Can Haz Party" at Hope Lounge, the soiree hosted by those goddamn Kids With Snakes.  With endless laughs and quite possibly the greatest turkey burger THE CULTURE OF ME has ever been witness to/digested, the "I Can Haz..." series featured a slew of our neighbros in Bad Decision, Famous Friends, Alex English (the hook-up extraordinaire) and DJ Holla, along with the dancing feet of everyone you love, ever.  We will miss it, until the next warm season, that is.  Special thanks go to 1/2 of the next big thing in hipster chick ghetto rap, Vanilla Ice-T.

mp-FREE: new Matt and Kim - "Daylight"

Sep 30, 08

Oh, Matt and Kim, we have to be honest.  We were quite scared about what would happen when you guys would decide to follow up your unstoppably cute and fun self-titled effort.  With Grand, the new record yet to see release, you had us all tied up in knots of our own emotions of how we were wondering how bad we would feel if we gave you a bad review or something.  But you know what?  That hasn't happened yet and it probably won't.  We've heard two tracks from the disc (this one and the previously awesome "Good Ol' Fashion Nightmare") and we're still happy to say that they're both really really really good.  So there.  No more worries from us about that "sophomore slump" thing.  This new song, "Daylight", is straight up boner-worthy.  It's that good people.  Get that new shit here from Green Label Sound, the "singles only" label.

Video: Oasis shares behind-the-scenes look at making of Dig Out Your Soul

Sep 30, 08

Get well soon Noel!  Okay, now that that's out of the way, we have to honestly say that the guys in Oasis know exactly what they're doing.  It's like almost everything they do (aside from antics on stage) are completely premeditated.  This clip, from the DVD extra "Gold & Silver & Sunshine" included in the packaging of Dig Out Your Soul,is a great point-of-view from a band that's perfected the art of recording records.  A well-oiled machine (finally), if you will.  The boys are heading back out on tour in December and here's hoping that the aforementioned injury to both Noel's body and mind won't be around when they pop by your city.

Dec 04 Los Angeles, CA Staples Center
Dec 06 Las Vegas, NV The Pearl

News: Comet Gain to release 20th single

Sep 30, 08

"Love Without Lies", the 20th(!) single from the UK's best-kept (and maybe longest-running) indie pop group Comet Gain, sees release as a double-A side 7" record (b/w "Books Of California") on October 13 via our friends at Twee As Fuck Records.  Nearly twenty years running, Comet Gain are releasing this single in advance of their newest full length record, entitled Broken Record Prayers, which will also see release before the end of the year.

mp-FREE: Britney Spears - "Womanizer (Brad Walsh remix)"

Sep 29, 08

We hadn't heard the new track from Ms. Spears, er, Britney (bitch) to this point, but this remix by our good friend and downtown luminary Brad Walsh makes us feel like the track must be a complete and utter lift from Robyn's camp, because it reeks of the hip-as-fuck Swede's delivery technique.  We like the remix a lot (it stays true to what we can only hope will be a new career for Britney in only making club-worthy anthems) and we're positive that it will be added to your favorite clubland DJ's set any day now.  It's insistent and very very very 90s.  Like, early 90s y'all.  Wubba wubba wubba, truly.

mp-FREE: Katy Perry - "I Kissed A Girl (DJ Dunno's Wrong Wrong Wrong remix)"

Sep 29, 08

This will be the last remix of Katy Perry's now-totally-annoyingly-ubiquitous summer 08 jam.  It's not due in any part to this track being bad.  On the contrary, the remix is a glorious banger, filled with clicks and wamp wamps all up in every nook and cranny of the seven-plus-minute version DJ Dunno creates.  It's more because the track itself (the original track, if you can remember what that even sounds like) is distinctly straight-up summer.  It's catchy but weightless, full of in-everyone's-face posturing and carries with it no real substantial this-will-last-forever mentalities.  The remix is all repetition and mass appeal, as much made to be heard in full as it is to be used more as a transition, so as to make someone in the crowd ask what version of the song they're hearing.

Emerging: Cut Off Your Hands

Sep 29, 08

You know when you get that feeling in your head that makes you stop what you're doing, like none of what you were doing at the time matters anymore, like dropping a glass on the floor and realizing you can't just stand there anymore looking at the shards on the ground and puddle of liquid ever-expanding?  That's what we call the "whoa effect".

The guys in New Zealand-based Cut Off Your Hands (formerly known as Shaky Hands... thanks lawsuits!) have effortlessly brought the aforementioned "holy shit" to our doorstep today with "Happy As Can Be" off their upcoming EP of the same name.  There is a sense of brash excitement and force here that we haven't heard close to since this other band a few years back.  Maybe you've heard of them.  They're called Klaxons.  But where that group of UK "don't-call-us-rave" dance punks cawed and crowed and hummed with disco lust and dancefloor ambitions, Cut Off Your Hands are just about as "pop" as you can get.  "Pop" as in populist, that is.  Get ready world, because Cut Off Your Hands are about to dethrone your favorite scene idols.  Post-haste.

Live: The Antlers embark on first ever tour

Sep 29, 08

It's fair for us to say (at least, we think it is) that if you happen to catch The Antlers on any of these dates, you and/or your girlfriend/younger sister/female cousin/etc. will fall in love with Peter Silberman, the shaky-voiced mastermind responsible for some of the greatest singer-songwriter indie pop we have heard.  Ever.  We mean it.  Silberman plays it coy and nervous because, well, he's coy and nervous.  It's not a guise or a clever ruse, but simply fact.  You have no heart if you do not get deeply affected by the work that Silberman puts into The Antlers, and on that, we bring you one exhibit of evidence in "Two", off of Silberman's upcoming Hospice LP, set for release sometime next year.

Oct 01 Baltimore, MD Talking Head
Oct 03 Pittsburgh, PA Garfield Artworks
Oct 04 Cleveland, OH Tower 2012
Oct 05 Columbus, OH Cafe Bourbon St
