Video: Fires Of Rome - "Set In Stone" + playing Tribeca Grand in May

Mar 31, 09

Gotham's own new wavey/prog rock act Fires Of Rome dropped their kaleidoscopic, genre-dabbling debut record You Kingdom You back in January to pleasant response (most notably from The New York Times) and have been riding that wave as of late while still remaining quite mysterious and sort of unchampioned as of right now.  They shot a video for album track "Set In Stone", which is basically an exercise in high-speed cinematography a la "Time Warp" mixed with couturiers.  The trio are planning on playing May 2 at the Tribeca Grand Saturday party where you can find us every week with a date in Roanoke, Virginia the day before.  All of this is, of course, to just say don't miss their only local show on the calendar right now.

Live: Fischerspooner to premiere new songs in triplet of intimate shows

Mar 31, 09

The three dates, April 23, 24 and 25, where Fischerspooner will be debuting new tracks from their third record, Entertainment, are set to be held at the end of next month at the Performing Garage here in New York City.  According to principal Casey Spooner, the show (which is set to include homages to fashion, dance, theater, etc.) is "not like any show we have done before...sonic collage made from disparate literary and historical sources and theatrical traditions – the US space program in the 60s, Noh and Kabuki theater, Flamenco, Mark Twain and other disparate sources.  We wanted to create a show where it was impossible to decipher history or specific references. We are in a different place a decade later and this show reflects that."  The group has decided to open the final 3 rehearsals of their new stage show for an extremely limited audience of only 60 people each night.  Tickets, at $40 a piece, will be available here for purchase starting at 10am on April 1.

Video: The Black Lips - "I'll Be With You"

Mar 31, 09

Yay Christmas, birthdays and home movies of the 1960s!!!  The Black Lips are back with another video for "I'll Be With You", the sappiest of the sappy from their latest record, 200 Million Thousand.  Get that record now if you don't already have it guys.  The subversive garage rock of Atlanta's nicest, most kissworthy boys is sure to garner a slot on many a year-end list.  Unless of course, you're in India.  Then, well, not so much.

World Premiere: The Bloody Beetroots - "Warp (Religion remix)"

Mar 31, 09

Another day, another "Warp" remix, right?  This time, it's a blippy three minutes fifty-one seconds courtesy of LA's Religion, who turn the Bloody Beetroots' original into a turned-to-eleven floor-shaker, with a break around the two minute mark that's heart-stopping.  When the bass kicks back in full steam half a minute later, you know they're on to something.  Blog house, meet another track to add to the playlist.

Web: Team Robespierre needs your help to get on MTV's rotation

Mar 31, 09

Every week, the mtvU show "The Freshmen" highlights five acts they think are at the breaking point.  They announce the five acts and then fans can vote online for their faves.  The winner each week has their video get into rotation on the channel and (who knows?) maybe even the big brother nets as well.  And even though Brooklyn's Team Robespierre's track "88th Precinct" and its video have been out for what seems like forever, we love the synth-heavy party tracks that Ty and the boys make, so they get our vote, no contest.  Here are this week's nominees:

Nippsey Hustle - "Hussle in the House"
Loney Dear - "Airport Surroundings"
Corneille - "Back to Life"
Team Robospierre - "88th Precinct"
J*Davey - "Slooow"

Emerging: White Arrows

Mar 30, 09

We've been secretly thankful to be late to this party guys.  This crew of gents called White Arrows, who create ramshackle indie rock that's at home alongside the 80s tape exchange as it is in these days of Hype Machine hypnosis, sound exciting and derivative at the same time.  We love the fact that some people will hate the ever-loving substance out of them and some will preach their gospel.  Divisive bands are what we need these days because how fun would it be if everyone loved every band?  It'd be like, um, a Wednesday at Urban Outfitters or something.

Anyways, back to topic, the boys have an EP that's been out for a bit now called Hearts & Lungs and it's all very very very turn-of-the-millennium LA, New York and Glasgow and this track called "Coming Or Going" is all ice cream truck fanfare and plodding guitars, "whoa oh"s and constant singing with drawled vocals a la a lovesick fool (or a drunk, your guess is as good as ours).  It's cutesy and catchy and, well, just get it already.

Download: Frankmusik - "Better Off As Two (TEDD remix)"

Mar 30, 09

How is it that we can never seem to get over how amazing every track we hear from Frankmusik is?  We are kind of getting obsessed with his bouncy, what he calls "wonky" tactics for taking over the pop music world.  He can do it, we tell you, we all just have to believe in it as much as the London boy does.  A few spins of any of his tracks (take, for instance, this new remix from TEDD) and you'll be as convinced as we are that he should be a proper-as-fuck star.  We double-dog dare anyone to think otherwise.  This single, "Better Off As Two", comes out next month in the UK.
