Cinema: Panda Bear soundtracks "I Had A Dream I Went To Coney Island"

May 04, 09

Last week, we had the pleasure of attending the Babelgum Online Film Festival Awards screening during the Tribeca Film Festival. One of the short films we screened (and one of the big winners, raking in the Spike Lee award for "mini masterpiece) is the just-over-four-minute "I Had A Dream I Went To Coney Island". The silent film is a super 8-shot clip of the playground of the world, soundtracked by Panda Bear aka Animal Collective's Noah Lennox. The film is surreal because it juxtaposes the Coney Island of today with the film technology of yesterday. What you end up--thanks in no small part to the soundtrack--is a vision of broken dreams and decay, a sort of endnote for a once all-too-prominent and extravagant area. And now that plans are 100% underway to "revitalize" the area (we still don't fully know how we feel about that whole thing), it stands as a visually surreal, sad and ultimately ugly display.
