Getting Sassy with...Dublin Duck Dispensary

Jun 25, 09

We here around THE CULTURE OF ME were once obsessed with all things relating to Sassy and Dirt magazines. And while those titles are long gone, the sentiment of how they covered the culture industries has indeed left its mark on writers and culture vultures everywhere. It is because of that influence that we are proud to present our features post, "Getting Sassy with...", wherein we bring you that much closer to your favorite bands by way of a simple Q&A session that's both painless and informative. Ha! Beat that, FOX News!

This time: Dublin Duck Dispensary.

We've been enamored with Bobby Aherne aka Dublin Duck Dispensary since we first heard screeching demos of his in the aftermath of the Wavves no-fi noise pop explosion. But DDD has been pumping out ADD-addled jams since 2006 and has just been way way way under the radars of America. That's changing of course, as Aherne is finally getting the recognition for his approach to whimsical bedroom indie rock he's been under the spell of, releasing two full length discs and a handful of EPs--the latest of which, Yykes Basket, he'd let go free for a single day last month--and we hope for nothing but great great things for his wide-eyed independent-thinking rock 'n' roll. We sent our questionnaire his way and he fired back his answers, including tales of Tripping Daisy, hamsters in his rucksack and this book series about a young boy called Harry Potter.

Name?
Bobby Firenze Ambrosia Aherne.

Hometown?
Carpenterstown, Dublin, Ireland. It's where Jesus will live upon his imminent return.

I now live in:
Hope of the second coming.

Number of states visited?
I've been in many states of mind, but I've never been to America.

My favorite place in my hometown is:
My hometown is a made-up suburb... it's bullshit. However, my favourite place in Dublin is (of course) my ancestral duck dispensary, from which I borrow my pseudonym.

Most recent phone bill total?
Bill? Is that a duck gag? I don't like it.

Items found in my day-to-day bag (if applicable)?
iPod, hand sanitizer, a dozen hamsters, artificial arms, hairdryer, frankincense, gold, myrrh.

First album bought on your own?
Something by Dustin... that's Dustin The Turkey. In fact, my first several records were probably full-length releases by a talking turkey. Oh how I wish this question was “first single” instead (“Cotton Eye Joe”, if you got to know).

Favorite song memorized as a child?
The entire glorious symphony that is “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”. And not just the title song... that's too easy. No, the entire yoke. Oh, I just realized you're asking for my favourite (with a 'u'), and not my first, but I ain't changing it!

When I sing in the shower, it’s usually:
Quite reverby.

The one song that must be on every mixtape is:
I'm gonna be a spoilsport nerd and say, "it depends on the mixtape". Only joking... I'm not. The answer is Andrew W.K., “We Want Fun”.

Last book read?
I'm reading The Dog of the South by Charles Portis. It's very funny, but I don’t know if I've LOL'd yet. That probably means that it's humorous and not funny. It's humorous.

Favorite book ever?
Harry Potter. You should check it out. It's a heartbreaking tale of a young man's struggle with anorexia and toilet troubles... or something. But if I'm not allowed pick seven books as one, it's Tales Of The Unexpected by Roald Dahl. And if I'm not allowed pick a compendium of short stories, then fuck you. I'm making the rules here.

After the jump, much more with Dublin Duck Dispensary.

Favorite thing you bought this year?
Dungarees for my girlfriend.

Instruments played (chronologically)?
Spoons, piano, triangle...the end.

Least favorite day job before getting this gig?
This gig? What gig?! I once worked at a deli meat counter... an odd job for a queasy veggie. My duties included helping to lift an entire spit roasted pig (with olives for eyes and an apple in its mouth) into the window, and proceeding to cut chunks out of its corpse's arse for a week until it rotted.

Favorite record this year?
Despite a severe overdosage... Merriweather Post Pavilion.

Favorite record ever?
Tripping Daisy, Jesus Hits Like The Atom Bomb.

The one record I’d save from a house fire is:
I have two copies of some stupid Raconteurs' 7" which are worth like 100 quid each. But I don't think I'd save any records from a house fire. Would you?

Guilty pleasure record you don't want us to know about?
Well... I've listened to The Best Of The 1910 Fruitgum Company more than 30 times straight through so far this year, but that's an innocent pleasure.

My favorite place to play on tour is:
Definitely Dublin. Dublin crowds are the greatest. Yeah Dublin. Whoo fucking Dublin! (NOTE TO SELF: PLAY OUTSIDE OF DUBLIN)

If I wasn't doing music I would be:
In jail.

Last illegally downloaded song/album (be honest)?
I have NEVER (and would NEVER) download something illegally...(answer: The Best Sixties Summer Party Ever)

Latest TV addictions?
“Get A Life”, “Look Around You”, “Summer Heights High” and “Delocated”... I fucking LOVE laughing!

Favorite music video this year?
I'm stumped. A-ha's 'Take On Me'? Was that this year?

Who is in your dream band (must be living musicians)?
Not me anyway... Give me Tim Delaughter, Noah Lennox, Nick Thorburn, Brian Kelly, Benny Andersson and Greg Saunier. Plus a choir.

The best concert I went to this year was:
Animal Collective. I don't care that they're just pressing buttons... they're nice buttons.

Recent song you can't get out of your head?
The Barbaras, “Heaven Hangs”.

Press play on your iPod/media player and list the first three songs that come up.
The Crystals, “Heartbreaker”; The Libertines, “Babyshambles”; The Polyphonic Spree, “Light and Day (The Bees remix)”.
