News: Nine Inch Nails announce first set of figures for Ghosts I-IV

Mar 12, 08

Dear everyone, please stop using the phrase "pulled a Radiohead".  That's just a lame duck way of saying that Trent Reznor succeeded in his goal: to prove that releasing records the old-fashioned way for seasoned artists with already massive followings is quite moronic.  According to the press release:

Nine Inch Nails' 36-track instrumental opus Ghosts I-IV, released March 2 via NIN.com, has amassed a first week total of 781,917 transactions (including free and paid downloads as well as orders for physical product), resulting in a take of $1,619,420 USD.

"These figures represent the most relevant and contemporary metric for measuring how Nine Inch Nails' music is reaching its fans," said NIN manager Jim Guerinot.

NIN's label The Null Corporation will not be releasing traditional sale figures to soundscan.

As previously reported, the $300 Ultra-Deluxe Limited Edition of Ghosts I-IV immediately sold out its run of 2500. The $5 Download, $10 2XCD set and $75 Limited Edition Deluxe versions are still available at NIN.com.

News: Radiohead enter the UK charts at #1

Jan 06, 08

The NME is reporting that Thom and the gang will register in at the number one position on this week's album charts, beating out other locals Take That and "X Factor" winner Leona Lewis.  After moving a reported 1.2 million digital download units on the first day it was available to fans nearly three months ago, the physical release (that is, the CD that you can buy in stores now, most notably at Amazon.com for an astonishing $7.99) has apparently sold around 50,000 copies in the band's home country.

In other chart news, the disc entered the Aussie charts at number 2 and the Billboard 200 chart here in the US at a relatively shitty number 157.

News: Leona Lewis sets first week sales record in the UK; outsells others in top 10 combined

Nov 19, 07

From the Guardian UK:

X Factor winner Leona Lewis has set a new record for the fastest-selling debut in the UK, after her album Spirit sold over 375,000 copies during its first week of release. Lewis's total outstrips the previous record, set by the Arctic Monkeys' 2006 debut Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, by 12,000 copies. Lewis also managed to outsell the rest of this week's top ten combined.

The success of Lewis' debut means that the album is a dead cert to be number one this Christmas, with HMV predicting she will bank a million sales by the end of the year. Meanwhile, the 22-year-old singer is enjoying another chart victory with her single "Bleeding Love", which remains at number one in the UK singles chart.

News: KISSology Volume Two hits it big on the DVD charts

Aug 28, 07

"We are very proud of 'KISSology: Volume Two,' and these sales numbers show just how excited the KISS fans were too. The KISSology DVD series has become a phenomenon itself and we're delighted to be working with the band to present this material in its best possible form," said Paul DeGooyer, VH1's Senior Vice President, Home Entertainment, Audio and Games.

"KISSology: Volume Two 1978-1991" is an expanded 3 disc set boasting nearly 7 hours of rare or never-before- seen footage featuring notorious television interviews and early KISS music videos. Volume Two follows KISS from the height of mid 70's KISSteria through the departure of Peter and Ace, the KISS unmasking and the Eric Carr years. Additionally, this DVD set will include the previously never before seen European theatrical version of the 1978 cult classic KISS film -- "KISS IN ATTACK OF THE PHANTOMS" -- complete with scenes not seen in the U.S. version!

KISS has sold 80+ million records throughout their career. The group has earned more than 55 gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards since receiving its first gold record for "KISS Alive!" in 1975. KISS has performed more than 3500 concerts in front of nearly eighty million fans in virtually every country on planet earth.

"KISSology: Volume One 1974-1977" jumped back up to the #12 spot on the chart this week with a 105% increase in sales. Volume One originally debuted as the #1 Music DVD when first released and has been certified 5x platinum.

Sheesh, is it us or does this sound way too much like Gene Simmons wrote the press release.  Take that with your family jewels.

Charts: This week in Billboard

Aug 08, 07

01.    Common, Finding Forever
02.    Korn, Untitled
03.    Various Artists, Now! 25
04.    Various Artists, Hairspray soundtrack
05.    Miley Cyrus, Hannah Montana 2 (Soundtrack)/Meet Miley Cyrus
06.    Sean Kingston, Sean Kingston
07.    Various Artists, Kidz Bop 12
08.    T.I., T.I. vs. T.I.P.
09.    Fergie, The Dutchess
10.    Linkin Park, Minutes to Midnight

Ugh, Korn.  Once again, relevancy questions ensue.  I mean, at least Kidz Bop is affecting the zeitgeist.  Jonathan Davis isn't even comparable to 7 year-olds doing karaoke.
