Cinema: "Todd P Goes To Austin" screening in Brooklyn this weekend

Nov 10, 09

Todd P (nee Patrick) is no stranger to New York scene kids, or really scene kids the nation over. The man's been behind so many of the breakout successes from the DIY scene over the last half-decade or more and for that, much of the independent music and art scene owe him praise and thanks. This past March, at the annual SXSW festival, as Todd P was doing his usual throwing of rad parties in any space that would have him and the bands, filmmaker Jay Buim trained his lens on Patrick and a few bands you may have heard of (Matt and Kim, Dan Deacon, The Death Set, Team Robespierre, Mika Miko and more) for the festival, getting as in-depth a look as any has gotten previously inside the world of Todd. What came out of it all is this film, "Todd P Goes To Austin".

This Sunday, 303GRAND hosts the kids from Bodega host a very special screening of the film and topping the night off, they'll also screen a short from Ghostly International about producer/DJ Michna. Oh yeah, and you can enjoy free coffee, beer and wi-fi the whole night.

Cinema: "72 Musicians" gets intimate with amazing acts; screening in Dallas this weekend

Oct 13, 09

In a new independent film directed by Bob Moczydlowsky, "72 Musicians", shot and edited over the last two years is based upon a strikingly simplistic concept: get rad bands, get rad bands to sit down and talk about the music industry, life on the road, life in a band, life in general, etc., shoot rad band playing some songs, release film about rad bands. Some of those rad bands? Spoon, White Whale, Coalesce, The Get Up Kids, The Republic Tigers, Mac Lethal, The Life & Times, Roman Numerals, SSION and more. So yeah, a rad grouping of acts all welled up and getting all sorts of intimate. The film is screening this weekend at the Dallas VideoFest and the soundtrack is available in full for free download if you sign up to get more news about the film in the future, which we full-on suggest you do.

Live: Youth Brigade playing Brooklyn this weekend + "Let Them Know" screening

Sep 14, 09

Legendary forebearers of California punk/hardcore culture Youth Brigade--who, yes, are still together and are still playing out as much as possible--are coming to Europa in Greenpoint, Brooklyn this coming Saturday night for a show celebrating the limited theater release of the hardcore/punk film "Let Them Know" chronicling the 25 years of the band and the impact of the BYO imprint. Supporting the guys on the bill are The Casualties and Off With Their Heads. A screening of the film is also happening the same day at the Anthology Film Archives at 4pm.

Cinema: "Let Them Know" about Youth Brigade and BYO Records

Sep 05, 09

Telling the tale of one of the most relevant labels in punk rock (BYO) and a band that is more than seemingly synonymous with the word itself, Youth Brigade, the new CD/book/film "Let Them Know" is an astonishing 90-minute look (the film at least) behind the lines of twenty-five years in the storied history of both. Packed with interviews, rare footage and first-hand accounts, the film traces the label (kicked off in 1982) and band's beginnings in Los Angeles, the next two-and-a-half decades and the importance to the world of punk and hardcore musicians and fans along the way and into tomorrow. On the CD that comes with the package are thirty-one tracks from Youth Brigade (natch), 7 Seconds, Subhumans, Dropkick Murphys, NOFX, Ian Mackaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi), Anti-Flag and many, many more. It all comes out September 22.

Cinema: Noah And The Whale pen film "The First Days Of Spring"

Jul 31, 09

For their second album, UK indie popsters Noah And The Whale have created the soundtrack accompaniment to a film that guitarist/vocalist Charlie Fink has just completed of the same name: "The First Days Of Spring". The film itself stars Alex Barker, Ben Lloyd-Hughes and model/actress Daisy Lowe, one of the more prevalent indie crushes of the last few years. The film and album are both set for an August 31 release and from the looks of the trailer, should both be remarkably frank and subtly beautiful. Cardigans and fixed gear bikes and beards, oh my! Also, the Yacht remix of their song "Blue Skies" is currently our heart.

Cinema: Panda Bear soundtracks "I Had A Dream I Went To Coney Island"

May 04, 09

Last week, we had the pleasure of attending the Babelgum Online Film Festival Awards screening during the Tribeca Film Festival. One of the short films we screened (and one of the big winners, raking in the Spike Lee award for "mini masterpiece) is the just-over-four-minute "I Had A Dream I Went To Coney Island". The silent film is a super 8-shot clip of the playground of the world, soundtracked by Panda Bear aka Animal Collective's Noah Lennox. The film is surreal because it juxtaposes the Coney Island of today with the film technology of yesterday. What you end up--thanks in no small part to the soundtrack--is a vision of broken dreams and decay, a sort of endnote for a once all-too-prominent and extravagant area. And now that plans are 100% underway to "revitalize" the area (we still don't fully know how we feel about that whole thing), it stands as a visually surreal, sad and ultimately ugly display.

Cinema: Gorillaz documentary "Bananaz" screening next week

Mar 20, 09

Only at the Soho Apple Store here in New York City could there be a G-rated (the film was cut and edited specifically for these kinds of things) screening of what we can only speculate to be a really really rad documentary.  Directed by Ceri Levy, the film "Bananaz" looks at the cartoon band created by artist Jamie Hewlett and musician Damon Albarn, Gorillaz, which has hundreds of hours of footage collected over many months of shooting from 2000 to 2006.  The screening is free and is followed by a Q&A session with Levy.

Deets:

Date: Tuesday, March 24, 2009
What: "Bananaz" Film Screening and Q&A with director Ceri Levy
Where: Apple Store Soho 103 Prince Street New York, NY 10012
Time: Screening and Q&A is from 6:30pm - 8pm

Video: The trailer for Biggie biopic "Notorious" is posted

Sep 24, 08

After watching this clip, we can't really tell if we're really stoked to see "Notorious" or if it's just one step above that video where Puffy and Biggie are played by kids as themselves.  Anyways, Jamal Woolard looks spot-on and though we couldn't get that good of a look, the female leads playing Faith Evans and Lil' Kim are too.
