Fashion: Insound and your favorite bands make "mixtape" tee shirts

Nov 04, 09

Relive (maybe) your youth of making mixtapes for the ones you love/like/loathe/swoon over with this rad new concept tee shirt. Designed exclusively for Insound by Andy Dixon of The Chemistry Designs, the guys have created three mixtape t-shirts on American Apparel-quality tees. The back of each mixtape shirt includes lines for you to write in your favorite song titles. Insound will throw in a free Sharpie too!

The shirt categories are:

(1) “best love songs"
(2) “best break-up songs”
(3) "blank mixtape design"

To sweeten the pot, Insound has asked some of your favorite bands to customize their own mixtape shirts to auction offer for charity. Participating bands include The Hold Steady, No Age, Dinosaur Jr., Of Montreal, The Kills, etc. These special, hand signed band mixtape shirts will be auctioned off via eBay, with all of the proceeds going to benefit the nonprofit 826NYC.ORG. The first two auctions (Of Montreal & The Hold Steady) begin today with more auctions scheduled to begin soon. Keep checking the Insound Flickr feed for updates on the designs and playlists from the participating artists. Want to make your own? Order it here now!

Photos: Love Brigade "Revival" collection launch on September 18

Sep 21, 09

To commemorate the launch of their newest line dubbed "Revival", our besties in Brooklyn's own Love Brigade had an fashion-cum-installation art showing at the Williamsburg space formerly known as Supreme Trading and now called, well, not really called anything. The models lounged on chairs on swung in swings, play-napped in beds and hung out just generally on display for all to see in the newest menswear and womenswear that the LB kids had designed for fashion week. Joining the array were DJ sets from Finger On The Pulse and Gavin Royce (of Bad Decision) and we think JDH and Dave P from FIXED and Kids With Snakes had sets too, but we didn't stay for that. The collections were amazing (as usual) and we're going to have to stop by the storefront to get everything we can--especially the cardigan, flag tee and the compass necklace (cough cough).

Photos: Fashion's Night Out 2009

Sep 13, 09

This past Thursday night, hundreds of storefronts in the fashion world opened their doors en masse here in New York City to usher in the beginning of fashion week. Dubbed "Fashion's Night Out", the night had performances, in-store sales, food, drinks, hang-outs and all sorts of sightings. We went out and ran around and didn't take too many photos but we stopped by OAK where VDRK and Flashmen's Bradley D were DJing and said hey and then went over to the Music Hall Of Williamsburg to watch the DJ set by Calvin Harris, who was preceded by a live performance by Yes Giantess. The openers, though very energetic and completely wowed by where they were, fell a little flat and we were a little saddened, considering how good their work from a production standpoint seemed. Calvin destroyed with big beat and so much bass that there are frequencies of our hearing that we haven't gotten back yet. Oh yeah, and Naeem from Spank Rock was hanging out on the balcony with us, too.

Fashion: Asobi Seksu collaborate with Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction

Jul 22, 09

In another of their series of special edition tee shirts designed by musicians (which has included rare tees from Times New Viking, No Age and a handful of others), Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction have just released a tee shirt design for men and women utilizing doodles from Yuki and James of Asobi Seksu. The shirt, an Alternative Apparel heather grey destroyed tee, features a collection of drawings, doodles and musings that the band had made while on tour. It's pretty rad, super limited, out now and only $32. We totally want one. Or nine. And yes, somewhere on the shirt is the altogether hilarious PR move, "debut album in stores now!"

Fashion: Katy Perry designs items for "Fashion Against AIDS"

May 13, 09

Designers Against AIDS (DAA) for Fashion Against AIDS that also features designs by Yoko Ono, Estelle, Cindi Lauper, Dita Von Teese and others, everyone's favorite former Christian pop star Katy Perry's two contributions--a bodysuit and a cap-sleeve top--feature the alarmingly and tragically in-character message "WHAT'S ON THE OUTSIDE IS WHAT COUNTS" appear. 25% of the sales price will be donated to youth HIV/AIDS awareness projects. This is the second year that H&M has teamed up with Designers Against AIDS to put forward their collective initiate to spread a safe sex message to young people. You know, so like, they won't get AIDS and whatnot.

In other KP news, you can now check out the full version of the "Waking Up In Vegas" video we gave you the teaser of a while back. Perry also appears tonight on American Idol.

Photos: Patricia Field's birthday party on February 15

Feb 18, 09

We're not going to lie.  We were stoked/confused/nervous when we got the call to come by to Amalia, a chic restaurant/lounge/bar in Midtown (conveniently, like everything else nightlife-noteworthy in that area, located in a hotel) on Sunday night to cover the birthday party for fashion designer/epic redhead Patricia Field.  So, of course, we went, papped a little bit at a few of the guests which we're not namedropping since that's retarded and and then hung out for a bit shooting a lot of the people who came to do the same thing we were: honor the, er, guest of honor.  So, yeah, dig on the shots and please enjoy this fascinatingly bubble-electro-pop cover/remix of "Enjoy The Silence", performed by UK trio Red Blooded Women and remixed by our mates Designer Drugs.

Lists: The "Un-Top-10" as told by Charlotte of Luxe

Dec 19, 08

Continuing our collection of hilarious-or-not-at-all list-getting from all of our friends, today's "un-top-10" comes from Charlotte, promoter for Luxe Presents (who brings the monthly Rock Me Sexy Brooklyn party to Europa) and Chicago transplant, sent us in her list and said, "since I'm the best dressed promoter in town (holla!), I thought I'd do the un-top 10 list of hipster what not to wear."

10 Ironic tee shirts: you already have an ironic mustache, why do you need your shirt to point out your wit?
09 Bright colored tights: your legs should not look like pixie stix.
08 Hippie headbands: do you really need to secure your bangs to your forehead?
07 Men in low-cut v-necks with hairy chests: ew.
06 Men in woman's jeans: double ew.
05 Metallic leggings: you're asking people to notice your big ass and thighs.
04 Reebok Freestyles: you look like you have a neon Michelin man on your foot.
03 Keffiyehs: If Rachael Ray wore it in a Dunkin’ Donuts ad, the trend’s over.
02 Mom jeans: Most guys don't find fupa's hot.
01 Glasses with no lenses: You should be happy you have good vision!

Video: Steve Aoki talks fashion to Karmaloop

Jun 08, 08

Is it just us, or is Aoki totally going to be pouring vodka down this girl's throat, then banging her after this interview?  Also, the fact that Karmaloop has its own "broadcast" platform, is, er, nice.  Now you too can see other kids wearing kaffiyahs in videos, and not just on VICE and Cobrasnake and HIPSTER RUNOFF and, um, pretty much anywhere else too.  Our photos as well, we're sure of that.

The Long Blondes limited edition brooches and necklaces for sale

May 22, 08

Etsy designers Dolls & Molls from the UK were asked by Kate and the gang to design a collection of brooches and necklaces for them to sell on the road with them and you can now buy them for yourselves (without even catching the band live, which we don't advise anyways).  Snatch the brooch here and the necklace here.  They have tons of other amazing pieces too, FYI.
