Live: Crystal Fighters playing NYC tonight for new "Crush" party

Nov 19, 09

In a new monthly party curated by Ruthie from Famous Friends and Jen Lyon from MeanRed (two party promotion entities that never quit and never cease to amaze) called "Crush", the basement of Santos Party House is being taken over tonight by new huge thing act from Spain, Crystal Fighters. The band just this week released their new single via Kitsune, "I Love London", and they're known all over Europe for the destructive live sets and sweat-filled parties they're involved with. Joining them will be DJ sets from Elroy of France's Bisou GTI crew and Jason and Chaz from Palms Out Sounds.

Live: Andrew WK playing tomorrow's 66Sick anniversary party

Nov 16, 09

So, to celebrate the 66Sick party's 2 1/2 year anniversary (they just didn't put anything together six months ago we guess), the kids have brought us word that the very special guest Andrew WK will be in attendance, joining revelers and rabble-rousers like Bronques and co. from Last Night's Party, Felipe Cortez and Nicky Digital and residents Dances With White Girls, Micprobes aka Michael Meds and Dimitry!!!. He's rumored to be doing a musical performance of sorts but no word yet on whether it'll be a "party hard" WK set or a 55 Cadillac solo piano WK performance. Anyways, there'll be an open bar, drink specials and plenty of music to get you all sweating tomorrow night at Happy Ending so just do yourselves a favor and be there.

Live: Kap Bambino and Sleigh Bells playing The Studio at Webster Hall tomorrow

Nov 13, 09

Two sets of duos that make rousing bits and flashes of noise, Kap Bambino and Sleigh Bells--the latter being one of the huger hype-gathering acts from last month's CMJ festival--are joining forces for a tour de, er, force tomorrow night at The Studio space at Webster Hall. The show is 19+, which is rad, and it's ten bucks in advance if you purchase your tickets here. Twelve bucks if you get them at the door. It's sure to be a completely shout-worthy night.

Live: Tigercity playing select dates with Neon Indian

Nov 11, 09

Indie funk Brooklynites Tigercity are out on the road right now in the US and they've got company on select dates along the way: 2009's dreamwave champions Neon Indian. The sophisticated pop and dance/funk stylings that the foursome from the rad borough should be a well-fit match for Neon Indian's smooth and woozy arrangements--and considering the fact that the Neon Indian boys (and girl) are more than likely going to be moving to Gotham in the coming months, it's a good way to set up neighbors/friends/compatriots.

Dates:

Nov 06 Chicago, IL Schubas
Nov 07 Kansas City, KS The Brick
Nov 08 Des Moines, IA Vaudeville Mews
Nov 10 Denver, CO Larimer Lounge*
Nov 11 Salt Lake City, UT Kilby Court*
Nov 12 Boise, ID Nuerolux*
Nov 13 Missoula, MT The Palace*
Nov 15 Seattle, WA Nectar*

Live: Todd P brings DIY to the Brooklyn Museum this weekend

Nov 06, 09

Todd P (king of kings in most if not all of the indie rock circles of Gotham City) makes his way towards a more legitimate rise from the DIY scene he's commanded for years now with this, a special show happening this Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum, where he presents emerging indie rock talent from his borough's scene alongside sponsorship from, er, Target. Feeding your brain will be psych rockers Grass Widow, The Beets, and one of our favorite live act finds, the no-frills post-punk of Crystal Stilts. Bob Gruen, one of the best photographers the rock world has ever seen, will be on hand to check in on the other camera kids who swing by, and if you add your shots to the Brooklyn Museum's pool, Gruen will pick his faves to share with the world. It's all free and tons more stuff will be going down aside from the performances, so do check it out.

Set times:

5:00pm: The Beets
6:00pm: Grass Widow
7:00pm: Crystal Stilts

Live: Fixed turns 5 with Basement Jaxx this Saturday night

Nov 05, 09

Oh shit, we're sorry. Did we break your concentration right there? Were you swooning and frothing, all wide-eyed and "holy shit"-ting? Yeah, thought so. Don't worry, we're right there with you.

Fixed, the party helmed by big room tech DJs Dave P and JDH, is set to celebrate their half-decade existence this Saturday night at the one and only Santos Party House, with a line-up that you just have to hear/see/speak out loud to believe. With it's two levels of fun and darkness, headlining the night with a rare NYC DJ set is Basement Jaxx, who are riding undulating waves of good vibes from the September release of Scars, their latest house masterpiece album. They'll be joined by the residents. And downstairs is a full-on DFA disco assault with sets from Holy Ghost! and Matt Cash from the stable.

Honestly, we probably don't have to stress how amazing the night's going to be, but just in case, tickets are available at the door for $25. Totally worth it in spades in our books. Among the dozens of acts that Fixed has brought to the stages of NYC are Erol Alkan, Soulwax, Tiga, Alan Braxe, DJ Falcon, Fred Falke, Mr. Oizo, Booka Shade, Modeselektor, Justice, Digitalism, Klaxons, Peaches, LCD Soundsystem, Mylo and Vitalic.

Live: Jupiter One coming home to NYC for Thanksgiving show

Nov 05, 09

Bright-as-shit indie/electro rockers Jupiter One released their latest record Sunshower back in September to rave reviews pretty much everywhere you could look for one, and they've been on tour dates in support of the disc ever since. Now comes word that the soaring, shimmer-sounding five-piece (K Ishibashi's wife Mocha is rarely seen in press photos) are coming back home to New York City for a homecoming/Thanksgiving-time show at the Mercury Lounge on November 24. The show is on the early side, kicking off at 7:30p sharp and the boys will find support on stage from Donora, The Prigs and Jeff Taylor.

Live: Richard Lloyd (Television) plays with his new group next week in NYC

Nov 03, 09

How's this for a supergroup? Former Television guitarist Richard Lloyd and his new band, The Richard Lloyd Group, brings the guitarist into the fold with bassist Danny Tamberelli (the guy who played Little Pete on Nickelodeon's "The Adventures of Pete & Pete") and Dictators drummer JP Patterson. The band, in as rare an occasion as possible, are set to headline a special event at The Studio at Webster Hall on Thursday, November 12. Lloyd is supporting his album The Jaime Neverts Story, a collection of cover versions of Jim Hendrix songs where the punk godfather instilled a number of amazingly terse rules: "No more than three guitars on any track. No effects pedals, no fuzz box, no Octavia, no wah wah pedal, no feedback, nothing backwards. Just Stratocaster guitars into Supro and Magnatone amplifiers". The group will be joined by Hey Battlefield. Tickets are $10 in advance here and $12 the day of the show.
