News: The Young Punx bring out teaser tunes from Mashpop & Punkstep

Nov 20, 09

With a new digital EP, the split "Simple Pleasures/Like Dat" release, the gents in The Young Punx have showcased their continued evolution in purpose and sound, developing a much more prevalent punk/thrash element to their usual menacing dance formula. "Simple Pleasures" is straight up tape hiss punk, with female vocals, a dubby breakdown and elements of style completely unrelated to the club world and rather points its compass towards dive bar aesthetics and back alley goings-on. "Like Dat" is downtempo at its best, a seething drum stomp with speak-rap vocals (courtesy of Count Bass D) and as a B-side to "Pleasures", it acts as an opposite pole to the A-side's straight-thrash mentality. The crew's second LP, Mashpop & Punkstep, will see release in the near future.

News: The Joy Formidable schedule more dates + talk debut record

Nov 19, 09

We told you guys a few months back about the upcoming tour dates for the indie pop trio that stole our hearts and blew our minds this year (top 10 of ours for sure with A Balloon Called Moaning), The Joy Formidable as they'd serve as support in Europe for The Temper Trap and select US dates for Passion Pit and you can see the full tilt schedule on the band's MySpace page now. The trio have also just released a whole handful of UK dates that they'll be playing in the spring, months from now. It's been a busy year for the crew, what with videos and singles and an EP and live album and YouTube banning one of their clips, so when they told us they're also prepping their debut full length, we got to wondering where they'd be able to even fit in that time into their rigorous schedule.

News: Pyramid released their debut single "Medicine" this week

Nov 18, 09

Portland tape-loops-and-indie-rock act Pyramid used to just be called Starfucker, but now, well, they're Pyramid and they've just dropped their first UK single "Medicine" via Rough Trade shops this week and the video for the track, shot in the spring prior to the band name change, is a funky and glitchy resolution clip of boys and girls dancing, the band playing the ancient game Go and all sorts of nonsense graphic elements sprinkled all over the place. Super fun kitchen sink pop from these guys and we're definitely looking forward to way more from their camp.

News: Jinder's single "Youth Blood" out in December

Nov 16, 09

We haven't heard much from the Swedish electro pop chanteuse Josefine Jinder (she's recently dropped the "Little" portion of her moniker to just be "Jinder") but that's all changing these days as the Trouble & Bass recording artist is dropping her new single and package of remixes for "Youth Blood"--can you tell she's on T&B just from the track name?--via the imprint on December 1. The remixes, from Bok Bok, Tony Senghore and others, are as scattered in vibe as can be, with the Bok Bok edit really staying with us after the listen with its synthy builds, sprinkled and deformed vocal samples from Josefine and door-slam-stutter drum lines.

News: How To Fight Records releases 7" efforts from Meho Plaza and VOICESVOICES

Nov 12, 09

How To Fight Records, a tiny imprint in Los Angeles that doesn't have a Web site just yet (but yup, they have a Twitter account), are releasing a bunch of 7" singles and and a series of singles from a handful of the groups that reign supreme in the DIY indie rock scene there, like Foot Village, Meho Plaza and VOICESVOICES to name a few. The series of singles is dubbed "Animal Battles" and is based around a pretty rad idea, which the head of How To Fight described to us thusly: "We have a band pick out two animals they want to battle on the cover art. The B-side is the same band as the A-side, but it's something they normally wouldn't record and under a pseudonym". The first release under the series is from VOICESVOICES, the duo of women from the west coast that we fell hard in love with some months ago and gushed to have them play our CMJ showcase, and they're chosen pseudonym for the B-side, Gold Ether. Amazing. The label also has the fourth release from yet another band that we've featured pretty prominently here on the site, Meho Plaza, a 7" EP called Made Of Gold.

News: Mike Mago's new EP pairs him up with Malente, Dan Oh, more

Nov 12, 09

Mike Mago's newest EP is out on the streets on November 19 via Boemklatsch Records and the effort features tracks "Wooh!" and "Hey!" (not a joke) and it's stacked with remixes from Malente (Fool's Gold crew), Dan Oh, Gomes & Dion. The Mago tracks each serve as a glitched out electro bangers and are great foils for the treatments we've heard: Malente's bouncy edits and Dan Oh's dancefloor destructive LA-stylized hardness. There's enough elasticity in the original version of both "Hey!" and "Wooh!" to merit these versions and, we can only guess here, many more re-edits in the near future.

News: Blatta & Inesha and Mustard Pimp collaborating on Pigeon Flu

Nov 12, 09

December 1 brings the collaborative work from Mustard Pimp and Blatta & Inesha, two acts that have been near the hilt of overly great exposure and praise. The two Frenchies in MP are adding more to their CV's--they've already done almost 30 mixtapes in the last year--with news that they've just got on the line to do edits for South Rakkas Crew and Eagles Of Death Metal (!), and they've got an exclusive mix for the Dim Mak imprint seeing the light in the next week. We don't actually know anything more about the work coming out on December 1, but we're already salivating. Aren't you?

News: ALL schedule their first east coast dates in almost a decade

Nov 11, 09

It's been twenty years since Allroy's Revenge, the first record from the Descendents side project ALL which featured vocalist Scott Reynolds, so we guess it's a pretty rad occasion, especially since we just caught wind in our inbox that the guys from ALL (Reynolds, Bill Stevenson, Karl Alvarez and Stephen Egerton) will be playing together on the east coast in January of next year--for the first time in about seven years for them to do so. Given that Reynolds was with ALL for six albums' worth of material before leaving the group originally, we're fetching a guess that much of the set lists for these shows will be from those records, but it is ALL so you never really know what kind of tricks these legendary pop punk goofballs have up their sleeves. As to those, we're hoping that ALL have Milo Aukerman up their sleeves.

Dates:

Jan 06 Cambridge, MA The Mideast
Jan 07 Philadelphia, PA First Unitarian Church
Jan 08 Baltimore, MD The Ottobar
Jan 09 Brooklyn, NY Music Hall Of Williamsburg

News: Thunderheist release newest single for "LBG"

Nov 09, 09

Thunderheist, the electro/hip hop/party fusion duo of Isis and Grahmzilla return to hearts and minds with the release of their newest single, the popped-and-locked anthem, “LBG” aka "Little Booty Girl". “Little Booty Girl” as a single package comes complete with four new remixes (including one by the new Mad Decent signee Toy Selectah) and it all hits shelves digitally via Big Dada on November 30. We've got a remix of the track that didn't make the cut for the single release, but it's banging anyway, from Alias, more slithery than we've heard before, with an arrangement reminiscent of late-90s R&B/hip hop crossover artists where the vocals were up front and the beat never got in the way.

Tracklist:

01 LBG (original mix)
02 LBG (Toy Selectah remix)
03 LBG (Bombaman remix)
04 LBG (Lucy 'Lo remix)
05 LBG (Bonjay remix)
06 LBG (Lunice remix)

News: Bulimiatron is back with a new EP, Stab Attack

Nov 06, 09

Bulimiatron, a name we haven't spoken around these parts in almost a year now, was big shit to us with so many rad remixes, edits and bootlegs and now that we're hearing more from the electro breaks 22-year-old from Los Angeles, we're one hundred percent being viscerally reminded as to why we loved him in the first place. His sound is distinctly LA, that crunching beating-over-the-head with throbs and screeches, harder than an east coast banger by a few notches. Now signed to a small imprint, Bulimiatron is ready to cross that boundary of club producer/DJ to artist on the rise with Stab Attack, an EP of the title track and six (!) remixes from the likes of Mr Gaspar, Rands Deep and Steve Ryback, which just dropped today.
