mp-FREE: The Kooks cover Coldplay's "Violet Hill"

Jul 06, 08

Recorded live on Jo Whiley's BBC Radio 1 show "Live Lounge" (which, if you know anything about The Kooks is a great spot for the band to unveil their favorite cover versions), this job by the band of fellow Englishmen Coldplay's Viva La Vida... track makes us realize that it's totally okay for us not to like Chris Martin's group, so long as other bands are willing to make better versions of their most popular songs.  The Kooks' latest record, Konk, is out now and the guys play Central Park Summerstage on September 10.

Radio: John Davis (Georgie James) gets his own show on XM

May 15, 08

Laura Burhenn not necessarily included.  The Saddle Creek bandmember's show is called "1, 2, 3, 4 More More More", and it's on every Saturday at 4pm EST on the XMU Channel (43).  And not only is he riding the wave of the future of radio by goin on XM, Davis is also turning to the social norm of the future by giving the show its own MySpace page.  So, er, friend it, or something.  According to the write-up of the show, Davis "plays loads of classic power-pop, post-punk, new wave, punk rock, indie rock and plenty of the bands of today that are continuing the tradition".

News: British Sea Power on WXPN Friday

May 08, 08

Guys, we like rock music (sorry!).  We also like British Sea Power's brand of rock music, the kind of vibe you get when you mix Joy Division and a not-so-dry sense of humor.  We mean, they are from England, so it's still dry, just not dry dry.  Anyways, they're stopping by the World Cafe to play some songs this Friday, May 9 at 12 noon EST.  You should RSVP and make sure to check 'em out.

News: FCC + Republicans = broadcaster oligarchies

Dec 18, 07

The Associated Press just moments ago sent this out on the wires:

The Federal Communications Commission in a party-line, 3-2 vote, agreed Tuesday to overturn a 32-year-old ban and allow broadcasters in the nation's 20 largest media markets to also own a newspaper.

FCC Chairman Kevin Martin was joined by his two Republican colleagues in favor of the proposal, while the commission's two Democrats voted against it.

Martin pushed the vote through despite intense pressure from House and Senate members on Capitol Hill to delay it. The chairman, however, has the support of the White House, which has pledged to turn back any congressional action that seeks to undo the agency vote.

What does this mean for all of us?  Well, let's just say that, in the top 20 DMA's (TV or radio stations, but not both), the owners of those broadcasting companies will now be allowed to own a newspaper as well.  Meaning, control over the potentially biggest newspapers, radio stations and television stations could be even further conglomerated by the likes of Time-Warner, Disney, News Corp., Viacom, Bertelsmann AG, Comcast or GE.  Hooray for visions of Orwell!  Boo to freedom, choice and market competition!

mp-FREE: Tapes 'n Tapes - "Cowbell (live on KEXP)"

Dec 10, 07

Minnesota rockers (and Pitchfork-loved to boot) Tapes 'n Tapes have been busy this year, playing all sorts of places, like Lollapalooza etc. behind last year's pretty excellent LP, The Loon.  This track, one of that record's most impressive to our ears, was recorded live at KEXP for some compilation or another presented by Yaris and Urban Oufitters.  And once you wipe that taste out of your mouth, enjoy the track.  Otherwise, just sit tight because Tapes 'n Tapes also just wrapped the recording of their new record, set to hit you sometime in the '08.  Minneapolis does fucking rock.

News: New internet radio station/social network site Jango.com nears launch

Sep 21, 07

Earlier this week, we got an email from Benaz, who works for a new internet radio/social networking site that's just about to launch called Jango.com telling us all about the pro's and con's of the site, what to look out for and why it's different from the rest.  After latching on to it and trying it the last few days, we have to tell you.  She's right.  Jango.com even goes so far as to hook into iTunes and Amazon if you hear a track that you want to buy after hearing it.  Plus, they're totally open to submissions by new and undiscovered artists who want to get in on the action.

Oh my god you guys.  A social networking site that, for all intents and purposes, has done everything in its power to make sure it's a) a social networking site like your faves MySpace and Facebook, b) an internet radio station based on your tastes and similar artist recommendations like Last.fm or Pandora and c) completely free and COMPLETELY LEGAL.  Get into it y'all.

Here's what the higher-up's at Jango have to say about their site.

Jango is all about making online music fun, social and simple. A free custom radio service that learns from your taste and connects you to others who like what you like.

Just type in what you want to hear - and we'll play your chosen music and other favorites of Jango users who share your taste. You can customize your stations further by adding more artists and rating songs.

As you listen, your player will show other people listening to the same artist. You can "tune in" to any song they're listening to, message each other or share your stations with others. Or just go to any Artist Page to see all songs by that artist you can tune in to at any given time!

We're in closed private beta for the time being, continuously fixing bugs, improving performance and adding new functionality. There is no hard date set but we're planning on going public sometime in October/November.

As for pay scale and affiliations, Jango is an internet radio service following all restrictions of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA). We are fully licensed by ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and SoundExchange and we pay royalties due to all labels/artists every time a song is played.

Feel like trying Jango out for yourselves to see if they're on to something BIG?  Well the culture of me has a fitting gift for you then.  Go log on through our private invite to Jango right now.  First 100 clickers get in.
